While artists and dancers have often been at the forefront of social movements, dance as a form of activism is seldom explored within studio dance contexts. My hope with this workshop is to allow students the opportunity to explore questions and ideas around their own dance practice and how it connects to activism.
This workshop series will introduce students to the power of dance as a tool for identity and agency development, and activism through storytelling.
We will engage in these topics through discussion, an exploration of various dancers, storytellers, and activists’ work, and by creating original short dance pieces.
We will examine how our bodies interact with the concepts. And how privilege and power impact the way we move through the world as dancers, storytellers, and advocates.
The main themes include:
Radical Love: How does showing ourselves radical love impact our well-being, how we care for our community, and our ability to imagine and work toward better futures?
Storytelling: What is the relationship between privilege and power, identity and storytelling? How is dance used as a form of activism through storytelling?
Agency: What is our relationship to our own agency, voice, and intuition? How can we best effect change in our world?

While it is not ideal to have this workshop on zoom, we will absolutely make the best of it! It is an overwhelming time right now, and I am sure you are all spending much more time online than you would like. I do not want this course to overwhelm you or add to your stress.
There will be as little “work” to do outside our allotted meeting times as possible and I am prepared to be flexible with the students’ needs and desires! My hope is that we can create a space for authentic and empowering exploration, and create community and share joy as we do so.
